Monday, August 1st: Sensei Sushi Shindig

Today was a long day.  It began with a breakfast of leftovers....a chicken strip from McDonalds and a Taiyaki from the Katsukos (the fish shaped pastry filled with sweet bean paste).  Interesting, I know...I need to go grocery shopping.  We played with our kids like normal and then went outside for the Shion assembly.  Today, all the Shion kids (5-6 year olds going to 1st grade soon) came for one last celebtation.  We sang and danced with them, then came lunch.
We all ate beneath the Happy Dome.
The ground is turf-like and painful to
sit on, so they all brought plastic mats
along with their little lunch boxes.

Enjoying a popsicle before the field trip...
Note the camera men in the background,
the company posts the pictures somehow
and the parents can order them.

Let's go, yo!
Our destination: Kids Giant Playhouse
(that's my inerpretation of it at least)

The never-ending sea of black hair...
This place was huge and had so many different things for the kids to do!
Play with doll houses...

Kitchen slash grocery store...

Ball pit...

Bowling...

Playdough type stuff...

White board drawing...

And INFLATABLE!
Now, normally I'm not an inflatables person...you're basically jumping on huge, funny shaped balloons.  Like a bounce house (no walls on the Japanese one) and this slide thing...it just all seems so dangerous.  Yes, my motherly-side came out.  Until this kid grabbed my hand and insisted I climb up the dang thing and go down the slide with him...over and over and over again!  Adorable little Katoro kun made it worthwhile, though :)
It was a long day for everbody!
I really wanted to join this kid and
nap on the ride back to the school :)
After arriving back at the school, Madelyn and I changed and went down to our goodbye party with the other teachers.  The steak dinner last Thursday was with with most of the same teachers, but more to congratulate Takano teacher on getting married.  Tonight was totally about saying goodbye to us.  They made temaki sushi for us...the kind my family eats :)
She's eating raw fish!
Be impressed, people :)

Me and my sushi!
Oishii :)

Kaname Sensei and Tamaki Sensei
Emely Sensei and Lin Sensei

The group.
Chowing down some sushi.

She made it all by herself :)

Switched seats to talk with different
people :) These teachers actually had
pretty good English!

See the two little ball things at the top?
Those are fish eggs.
Yup.  I ate those.  I'm a beast.

Japanese "jello shots"
Not really, but they are literally little
things of jello.  This one is momo
or peach flavored.  I liked the picture
for the choking hazard.
After eating, we taught each other dances.  Madelyn and I taught them the line dance to "Good Time" by Alan Jackon (look at the music video to see the dance).  They had originally requested Lady Gaga, but we thought this would be better!  It's country so it's definitely American, not to mention it was easy to teach them :)  In return, they taught us a very popular childrens song called "Maru Maru, Mori Mori" Check out the video by clicking on the song title.  The kids dancing are the ones singing.  They're very popular apparently in Japan, at the moment!  That dance is tricky, the very cutesy Japanese style does not come naturally for me, but it was still fun :)
Group picture at the end of the night!
A very long day...I'm exhausted.  Goodnight, Monday!
